“You can’t manage what you don’t measure.”
Peter Drucker

One of the final pieces to the values puzzle, is to dial up our curiosity when it comes to habits. Because more often than not, when we’re feeling stuck, unmotivated or struggling (with things within our control), it’s usually because there’s a disconnect between what we truly value, and how we’re showing up in the world.

We’re only human, and it happens to us all.

It might just be that we’ve got a little distracted, falling into behaviours that don’t uphold or best serve our beliefs, principles or priorities. The good news is, knowing our core values can give us the power to course-correct at just about any time… But only if we identify and understand what habits support our own values. And what habits compromise them.

Core values are too obscure for us to measure in our daily lives. Even when we’ve done the important work of creating our own definitions. But what we can measure, are the repeated behaviours that feed into our core values.

If we’re willing to look honestly at ourselves, our daily habits can offer some pretty useful data on whether or not our actions are aligning with the kind of human we want to be.

If, for example, we value connection, but choose to spend more time scrolling on social media than engaging with face-to-face conversations with our loved ones… There is likely to be a disconnect between what we believe in (and need!), and how we’re behaving.

It’s not that there’s anything wrong with using our phones to communicate — it’s simply that there may be a healthier or more helpful habit to practise if we want to prioritise the value of connection in our life.

So, taking 1 of your core values, ask yourself today:

1. When I’m leaning into *value* what does it look like?

2. When i’m leaning away from *value* what does it look like?

This exercise can be done alone, but for bonus points, why not try it as a shared activity with a trusted friend, a colleague or a loved one? 😊
