“When the water is deep and swift, and I’m in a hard place… My values are the most consistent life raft.”
Brene Brown

Our values can be thought of as the foundations that hold us accountable to ourselves; verbs that represent who we are when we are at our best. Establishing our values prevents us from rationalising our lives away — whether that’s by making excuses, being in denial, or simply not having an appetite for the truth.

Now, values can sometimes feel a little abstract — especially when they’re presented as intellectual or philosophical ideas. Chances are, you’ve seen one of those old ‘Teamwork!’ posters on a staffroom noticeboard, or a series of bold words in a company tagline. Integrity, Quality, Innovation! On the surface, we get the message. But on a more practical and personal level…

What does it really mean?
What do values actually look like in our day-to-day lives?
And how do we figure out the ones that best represent the human we want to be?

These are all great questions! And the truth is… There is no ‘one way’ to figure out our values. There are many ways in to this kind of work, so we’ll spend time exploring different methods over the coming weeks.

One of our favourite ways to double-click on Values at Mojo is to go back to a crucible moment in our lives, and get curious about what ‘energy source’ we drew down on to get through. Our greatest growth often comes from our darkest times when our values are uncovered, and it’s in these moments that we can discover who really we are, and what matters most to us in life. By courageously looking to our experiences of both struggle and survival, we can connect with our authenticity, and our most intrinsic sources of energy… The ‘stars’ on our darkest nights, be it love, courage, vulnerability or positivity.

So, whether you prefer to reflect in a journal, through conversation with others, or via a playful walk, the first step along this journey is to ask yourself the following question:

What’s one of the worst things that has happened to me, and what are the words that best describe what got me through it?

Your answers may just start to reveal some important clues about what you truly value, and what really makes you you!
