“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.”
Henry David Thoreau
We are the authors of our own story, and one of the most powerful ways to celebrate this ownership is to share our dreams with others. It sounds easy enough… but more often than not, we fall short on this step, and hold back for fear of how our dreams may be perceived by others.
What if I they think I’m crazy?
What if I fail… Publicly?!
What if they think I’m not capable of this?
The reality is, judgement is a part of being human. We’re analytical beings by nature, and whilst there is always room to practise more empathy, it’s normal to assess the world around us… And to be assessed! What we can do, is embrace constructive feedback — the things that will help us move closer to our dreams and goals — and then politely ditch the rest. As many of our athletes like to say, I don’t care what anyone thinks of me (or my dreams), but I care about them.
What matters in any performance — or act of dreaming — is the way we feel about, and talk to, ourselves. So the trouble with ‘dreaming in private’ is that we allow ourselves to play small, and stay safe. We subconsciously decide that we’re only worthy of love and belonging if we’re succeeding at the things we first set out do. This can feed into the myth that our human-doing achievement is more important than our human-doing fulfilment. in the words of Einstein, “not everything that counts can be counted, and not everything that can be counted counts.”
Our dreams should never be measured on someone else’s terms, but what we do need, is to courageously share what lights us up… Little and often, and with a trusted team that we’ve built along the way.
Whether it’s a partner, a colleague, close mates or a mentor, our most trusted relationships form foundations for our sky-bound castles. It’s this A team that will ultimately give you the support and guidance to chase down dreams….
And to contribute to someone else’s journey by sending that support right back!
